Summer 2022: Expanding our Community Sailing and Junior Big Boat Programs

10 of our Figaro 2s were deployed this past summer to Community Sailing programs and yacht club Junior Big Boat programs. Our mission to expand the pool of offshore capable mariners by teaching young sailors fundamental offshore seamanship is coming to fruition!

SailMaine

Sailing BATO I and URGA BURGA, SailMaine, with 3 juniors on one boat, and 4 on the other, plus 2 coaches, raced again the Monhegan Island Race (141nm) and successfully completed the race.

Community Boating Center – New Bedford, MA

Taking two Figaro 2s RAGA and DOUZE ETOILES in their inaugural season with a Junior Offshore program, they came for their boats in April to get an early start. They sailed the Whalers Race as their first overnight offshore experience, and have recently completed the Salty 100. As well, when we had 2 long deliveries to get boats from New York to Courageous Sailing Center, CBC created an “adventure delivery sail” within their program and brought the boats to Padanaram, MA. A long spinnaker run, in company, with bioluminescence in their wake, gave these junior sailors a special night at sea!

Courageous Sailing Center – Boston, MA

In early July, the two Figaros VICITAN and WILLIWAW that came from New York were delivered to Courageous Sailing Center. Their first goals are to introduce their young sailors to larger keelboats, with sail-handling maneuvers and navigation.

Bristol, RI

Sailing the Whalers Race in June, with AQUARIUS and JOHN & DOROTHY, and with the Vineyard Race, and its two long ocean deliveries to Stamford and back, coming up, Richard Feeny continues his excellent and inspiring coaching of juniors.

Last summer 2021, Richard had 9 students who sailed about 1400nm in 8 overnights. All from a starting point of dinghies. And 7 of those 9 went on to become the youngest ever all-female crew racing the Newport-Bermuda Race.
