With college teams primarily sailing their Figaro 2s in their fall and spring academic semesters, we sought other opportunities for our boats to encourage other young sailors to learn fundamental offshore seamanship. Several summer community sailing organizations are natural venues for us a Junior Offshore Sailing program.
SailMaine was the first to step to the plate with a wonderful idea – to do a 5 week program, culminating in the Monhegan Island Race (overnight, 140 nautical miles). The program would include 5 weekends of sailing (with 2 weekends of daysails and 2 weekends being overnight training before the culminating overnight Monhegan Island Race). Additionally, all the students (4 per boat plus 1 Safety Officer/Coach) would take the U. S. Sailing Online Offshore Safety-at-Sea course, and, upon passing, they would receive their Certification.
Other such programs are in development.
