Junior Offshore Programs

With college teams primarily sailing their Figaro 2s in their fall and spring academic semesters, we sought extra opportunities for our boats to encourage young sailors to learn fundamental offshore seamanship. Several summer community sailing organizations and yacht clubs are natural venues for Junior Offshore Sailing programs.

Bristol, RI

With Bristol Yacht Club and Herreshoff Marine Museum taking the lead, this program will be open to high school and college students of Narragansett Bay, including Roger Williams, Brown, URI, Salve Regina, plus high school sailing teams locally. There are 3 program offerings in 2022, each offering weekend training sessions and culminating in an offshore race. The 2021 Bristol Figaro 2 program produced the group of 7 young women who went on this year to be the youngest all-female crew to sail the Newport-Bermuda Race!

New Bedford, MA

With Community Boating Center in New Bedford, MA taking the lead, the goal is for 2 teams of 4 junior sailors, sailing 2 Figaro 2s, with one safety officer/coach per boat, to complete either The Whalers Race (session 1) or The Salty 100 Race (session 2). In fact, they have completed both! Plus they helped COSC move two Figaros from western Long Island Sound to Padanaram, MA, as the first leg of the delivery of those boats to Courageous Sailing Center.

Boston, MA

Courageous Sailing Center in Boston, MA is using two Figaro 2s to begin training junior sailors in large boat maneuvering and sail handling, toward doing longer sails and eventually offshore. Their early impressions can be seen by this first newsletter entitled The Figaro Edition!

SailMaine, Portland, ME

SailMaine was the first to step to the plate with a wonderful idea – to do a multi-week program, culminating in the Monhegan Island Race (overnight, 140 nautical miles). The program includes daysails and weekend overnight training. Additionally, all the students (4 per boat plus 1 Safety Officer/Coach) will take the U. S. Sailing Online Offshore Safety-at-Sea course, and, upon passing, they will receive their Certification.
