Peter Garcia

Trustee

Peter has been head coach of the Bates College sailing team from 2016 to the present. He served as assistant sailing coach to Mike Horn from 2011-2015.

He also served as Director (1996-2010), Vice President (2004-2005), President (2006-2009) for the Gulf of Maine Ocean Racing Association.

Peter’s further maritime credentials include: United States Coast Guard license, Master (100 tons – expired); Instructor: Safe Boating, Piloting, Advanced Piloting, – U.S. Power Squadron (no longer active); US Sailing Safety at Sea certificate (course completed 3 times, most recently June 2020); successful completion
of US Sailing Principal Race Officer course; Georgetown University Sailing Team (varsity letter).

Peter is a member of: Storm Trysail Club, Taylor Pond Yacht Club, Royal Marsh Harbour Yacht Club. Peter received the Moxie Award (2009) from New England Multihull Association, for sailing safely back 200nm to Newport after losing a rudder in the Marion-Bermuda Race.

Peter received his J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center in 1968 and has had a distinguished career in the law since then. He served within Department of Defense, and later in his own law firm Orestis & Garcia in Lewiston, ME. He was Partner with Skelton, Taintor & Abbott until 2011, and then Of Counsel with Eaton Peabody since then.
