COSC: True “Offshore” Sailing, Training & Racing for Colleges and Maritime & Service Academies

The State of “Offshore” Sailing at Academies & Colleges
Most “offshore” sailing in colleges is in fact “keelboats ’round-the-buoys”, and not true “offshore”, i.e., overnight, out of sight of land, distance sailing. Thus fundamental seamanship skills are not acquired by college sailors who primarily race dinghies. Not having learned in college, many students upon graduation do not have the skills needed to advance in their sailing as adults.
“COSC is a paradigm shift for college sailing.” … Service Academy Offshore Sailing Coach
The COSC program dramatically changes the collegiate sailing landscape by providing select teams that are geographically concentrated, with one-design, offshore-capable fleets (of boats of a manageable size). These fleets can train among themselves or aggregate by training deliveries for one-design, true offshore, distance and overnight events.
“The Figaro 2 is the perfect boat for our COSC mission.” … Ed Cesare, COSC Board of Directors & Vice Commodore of Storm Trysail Club.
COSC, a 501(c)3 public charity, has acquired ten Beneteau Figaro 2s, the fundamental building block boats for the great French offshore sailors for installation into college sailing teams.
